Champion Lakes Park Fuel Management Prescription
CLIENT/LOCATION
Champion Lakes Provincial Park, West Kootenays
DATE
2017-2018
DIVISION INVOLVED
Cabin provided wildfire consulting services and provided a site-level prescription for Champion Lakes Provincial Park. We assessed and collected field data on approximately 40 ha of the park including information on the fuels, ecology, site and stands.
We worked closely with BC Parks staff to ensure we followed their fuel management prescription template. Any strategies or measures we prescribed for tree removal had to follow the Best Management Practices for Tree Removals in Parks and Protected Areas (Planning and Harvesting). We were also required to follow other guidance documents related directly to the park such as:
- BC Parks Fire Hazard Assessment
- Archaeological Impact Assessment
- Species-at-Risk Inventory
All aspects of the 2004 Management Direction Statement for Champion Lakes Provincial Parks were incorporated into the final plan.
Cabin conducted all the field assessments, project management, client liaison and office work (maps and prescription). We delivered maps and a fuel management prescription that protected the park values and mitigated the wildfire risk which improved the health of the forest and reduced the risk to human health and safety.
