Utilized LiDAR and multispectral imagery, integrated with a variety of spatial data in ArcGIS, for a detailed landscape classification database in order to create operational level, multi pass, development plans and road systems for spatial analysis, development and timber supply forecasting in the Arrow and Boundary TSA’s. For all areas of interest, the entire active and passive landbase was classified based on operability, merchantability and legislative constraints including the Interfor Kootenay FSP and Kootenay Boundary Higher Level Plan Order (KBHLPO). All plans prioritized development of areas identified in Forest Health Aerial Overview surveys and pine leading stands in order to achieve desired results, and were analyzed for the potential impacts this would have on wildlife (Grizzly Bear GAR, Connectivity Cooridors and Ungulate Winter Range), old and mature retention targets, patch size distribution, and future timber supply. Where old and mature targets would be impacted, suitable replacement areas were identified. Large contiguous openings were further reviewed to ensure that they are within the range of natural disturbance for the natural disturbance type. These openings were also analyzed to verify consistency with biodiversity objectives for very large openings as per the Chief Forester’s Guidance on Landscape and Stand Level Structural Retention in Large-scale MPB Salvage operations. Some planning areas required significant consideration of alternative harvest methods due to steep difficult terrain in conjunction with Visual Quality Objectives (Retention, Partial Retention and Modification), recreational and historical values i.e. the KVR Rail Trail.

The deliverables for this project include spatial databases of all planning along with tabular summaries for available and planned volume in each pass by harvest method and species as well as required road construction, allowing an estimated cost to be derived for future development activities. Cabin worked with Interfor to develop a “Type_Cover” database from the completed plans that can be easily queried to identify areas of potential development based on the clients current and future needs. Due to the operational level detail of the plans, field time and development costs in these areas have been reduced by up to 50%.
