Morfee Lake Mountain Bike Trail

Background

This project is one that is still talked about regularly. Cabin’s recreation team laid out and constructed a 16 km long blue-rated mountain bike trail around Morfee Lake, near Mackenzie, BC. This extensive trail traverses riparian areas along the shoreline of the lake and as such required timber bridges, boardwalks, French drains and special construction techniques that ensure natural drainage patterns are maintained.

Challenge

The project was in a remote site that encompassed sensitive areas such as riparian zones and complex terrain. The access was difficult and our crews had to rely on a helicopter for material delivery which required excellent logistical planning and communication.

Solution

To accommodate site sensitivity, site-appropriate machinery and materials were selected in order to reduce overall site disturbance. Our team also provided designs for infrastructure that were not only cost-effective but also practical and functional. The locally sourced material for the boardwalks was prepared and staged at several areas so crews could easily access it.
