Ymir Fuel Treatment Prescription & Supervision
CLIENT/LOCATION
Village of Ymir, Ymir BC
DATE
2022 – 2023
Ymir received funding through the Columbia Basin Trust to complete a 13.5 ha fuel treatment within the village including both a fuel treatment prescription and implementation. Cabin completed the following for the project:
- Initial field assessment
- Developed the prescription
- Marked the treatment area in the field
- Mapping and spatial products
- Licensing and permitting (FLTC)
- Supervised completion of the work
Challenge
During the supervision of this project, the teams encountered higher than expected levels of coarse woody debris (CWD), especially on the steep slopes, due to an intense wind event that occurred in May 2023 after the planning phase was complete. The treatment area was also within the Quartz Community Watershed which increased the potential for negative effects on the stream should excessive pile burning take place upslope of Quartz Creek.
Solution
To improve ease of treatment, improve safety for the teams and reduce impact to riparian areas a prescription amendment was provided to allowed an increase amount of CWD allowable left on the ground.
