Background
Much to the delight of our Operations team at Cabin, we were able to design and build a 4 km long blue-rated mountain bike climbing trail from East Boundary Road to the summit of Mt. Boucherie. Construction was difficult, as the trail traversed very challenging terrain and soils, some sensitive ecosystems, and First Nations cultural heritage resource sites. The experience and problem-solving ability of our trail team allowed them to complete this project on time under very difficult conditions in the extreme heat of an Okanagan summer.
This trail is part of a growing network of mountain bike network in the Okanagan, which are utilized by locals and tourists alike.
Challenge
Slopes were predominantly > 50% and the soils were thin veneers over bedrock and loose cobble, with the occasional talus slope to traverse. This meant our build team had to keep safety, drainage and ecosystem sensitivity front of mind to ensure this trail would hold up long term and not require excessive maintenance.
Solution
Patience, efficient layout and safe working procedures were crucial in the success of this project. Our crews once again displayed their ability to work in challenging terrain.
