DIVISIONS INVOLVED

Cabin had the opportunity during the winter of 2021/22 to travel to Vancouver Island and work in an ancient rainforest; Cathedral Grove.
MacMillan Provincial Park, located between Parksville and Port Alberni, is a marvel of old-growth cedar and fir trees that tower over the landscape like giants. The job was to build a 490 m boardwalk through the sensitive marshland with as little disturbance as possible. Only our smallest excavator was able to be onsite, which meant moving all the timbers by hand. Project highlights were:
- 490 m of Western Red Cedar Boardwalk
- 3 Viewing Platforms
- 300+ Helical Screwpiles
- Western Red Cedar Handrails
- Stairs for Beach Access
The lumber for the project all came from a local mill which made coordination of delivery much easier. The completed boardwalk will keep the ecosystem free from human degradation while allowing universal access for a wider range of users. It was an absolute pleasure to work on such an amazing project in one of the most well-recognized parks in BC.
