Background
The Kaslo and District Community Forest is situated in the West Kootenay region in south-eastern British Columbia. It extends along the glaciated, rocky benches and steep valleys marking the western shore at the northern end of Kootenay Lake. To assist in a number of community forest planning initiatives, they acquired LiDAR data to assist with these initiatives.
Challenge
The LiDAR data which was acquired by the Kaslo and District Community Forest was provided in a raw format that they could not use.
Solution
Cabin Resource Management was hired by the Kaslo and District Community Forest to process raw compressed LiDAR Data (.laz) and produce base LiDAR products. Using models developed in ArcGIS Pro by the Cabin geospatial team, a digital elevation model, bare earth model, slope model, canopy height model and topographical contours were created.
The spatial data was packaged in an Esri file-geodatabase and the datasets were clipped to individual tiles located within the community forest to reduce file size and for ease of analysis by the end-user.
