Cabin developed comprehensive ecosystem restoration blanket prescriptions aimed at enhancing the Ungulate Winter Range (UWR) habitat across 146.6 hectares in the China Creek Watershed. This effort was focused on improving the health and sustainability of critical habitats for ungulate species, such as deer and elk, during the winter months when food is scarce. To achieve this, we began by collecting extensive field data to better understand the current conditions of the land and identify key areas for restoration. Our team also laid out portions of the treatment unit boundaries, ensuring that the restoration efforts would target the most crucial areas for habitat enhancement.
We then created detailed prescriptions designed to promote the growth of palatable browse species, which are vital for sustaining ungulate populations during winter. These prescriptions included a variety of techniques, such as prescribed burning to reduce competing vegetation and promote the growth of nutrient-rich plants, as well as selective thinning to open up the forest canopy and allow sunlight to reach the ground. In addition, pile burning was utilized to manage debris and create space for new vegetation, while targeted pruning was carried out to further encourage the growth of beneficial plant species.
By integrating these methods, Cabin aimed to create a more resilient and diverse ecosystem, supporting not only ungulates but also other wildlife that depend on the area. This project highlights our commitment to ecological stewardship and our expertise in balancing environmental restoration with sustainable land management practices.
