BX Falls Trail

Since 2019, Cabin has been the RDNO’s preferred Trail Building Contractor. Cabin has been working with the RDNO to upgrade the trail adjacent to BX Creek in Vernon, BC since 2017. This trail is 6.8 km along BX Creek with two separate entrances at Star Road and Tillicum Road. The lower section features winding paths and aluminum bridge crossings while the upper section features the impressive BX Falls. This dog-friendly trail is a local and tourist favourite. The area features a micro-climate that hosts impressive cedar and fir trees within a steep gully.

Cabin has worked on planning and implementation projects along this popular trail utilizing our recreation planning, environmental team and trails crew to create a sustainable trail in a sensitive ecosystem. Beginning in 2017 our crews started installing wooden crib steps on steep terrain where access was difficult. Our crews have since worked on relocating, resurfacing and extending the trail as well as installing new bridges and abutments at key creek crossings. Below is a list of the major projects we have worked on.

• 2018: Trail rerouting, repair, and resurfacing. Crib step installation and new boardwalks.
• 2019: BX Falls Trail work including news sections of trail, concrete crib steps, guardrail, and staircase installation down to the popular waterfall. Environmental Planning for new bridge crossings.
• 2020: Bridge removal, gabion basket abutments, and 4 new aluminum bridge installations plus planning for new trail realignments.
• 2021: MSE retaining wall, concrete crib step installation, an 80-step timber staircase, and viewing platform design/build at BX Falls.
• 2022: Star Road concrete crib step installation and planning for Upper BX Trail extension including stream crossings, environmental permitting, and trail alignment.
• 2023/2024: Landslide rehabiliation & Spanky’s Trail revivial!

With our most ambitious project to date gearing up for 2023, Cabin has proven itself as a vital resource for recreation planning, design, and implementation of recreation infrastructure in sensitive environments. Our planning and environmental team’s experience with environmental permitting and planning combined with in-house design/GIS capability creates an ideal resource for trail planning. Our operations crews come equipped with project managers, environmental monitors, machine operators, carpenters, sawyers, and skilled trail builders to tackle the most difficult projects in the front or backcountry.

Throughout the years, Cabin has established itself as one of the premiere trail builders in the Interior of British Columbia. With our wide range of services and experience, we are proud to have contributed to Vernon becoming the Trail Capital of British Columbia in 2023.
