DIVISIONS INVOLVED
In 2024, Cabin conducted an archaeological impact assessment (AIA) on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) for there proposed irrigation pipeline upgrade at the Summerland Research and Development Centre (SuRDC) in Summerland, BC.
The pipeline upgrade measured approximately 4.60 ha. A total of 19 subsurface test areas (STAs) were evaluated during this AIA including a total of 488 subsurface tests (STs) dug; all were negative for identifiable cultural materials. Sediments within the study area are highly disturbed with no archaeological materials identified or recovered. With exception to lands surrounding a previously registered archaeological site, the primary project recommendation was that no further archaeological work is necessary within the immediate project area. However, it was recommended that AAFC and SuRDC continue to engage with the snpink’tn (Penticton) Indian Band regarding the management of non-archaeological cultural heritage values and the employment of PIB cultural monitors during construction. In addition, Archaeological monitoring concurrent with construction was recommended for lands adjacent to the previously registered archaeological site.
This project reflects Cabin’s commitment to working closely with our clients and interested First Nations to prepare heritage management plans that (a) meet regulatory requirements, (b) are centered in the interests of the Nation, and (c) work within a set construction schedule.
Further, this shows our capacity to conduct archaeological impact assessment projects in a timely fashion and that our staff have the expertise to prepare effective management solutions from the earliest stages of a project to its construction stages.
