DIVISIONS INVOLVED
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a remote sensing technology that uses laser pulses to measure distances to the Earth’s surface. When mounted on drones (UAVs), LiDAR offers a powerful tool for collecting highly accurate 3D spatial data over large or hard-to-reach areas.
Cabin’s RPAS team has been capturing LiDAR data for numerous clients since 2021, some projects highlights include;
Interfor Corporation: In the fall of 2024, there was a major windstorm which swept through the Okanagan and Kootenays, as a result Cabin was contracted to survey ~2000ha of affected areas in the Arrow Lakes Region. The resultant datasets were used by the client to assist with operational salvage planning.
Ministry of Forests: In support of developing a watershed restoration plan for a Cabin Operations Environmental project on the Wildhorse River, LiDAR and RGB data was acquired. A DJI Matrice 300 RTK drone was deployed with LiDAR payload to generate up-to-date surface information and create topographical products. In addition, a high-resolution orthophoto was provided to correlate the bare earth modelling to visible control points.
These data products were used by the hydrological engineer to create a hydrological model of the site and develop a restoration plan for the site.
Recreation Sites and Trails BC: The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is a scenic, multi-use recreational trail in southern British Columbia, Canada.
The trail system crosses many drainages and to assist RSTBC with trail realignments and site planning, Cabin has surveyed numerous locations to provide up to date topographical information and change detection analysis.
