Wilkin’s Boat Launch Repairs
CLIENT/LOCATION
Regional District Fraser Fort George (RDFFG) – Prince George, BC
DATES
2022
DIVISIONS INVOLVED

The RDFFG contracted Cabin to conduct boat launch repairs at Wilkins Regional Park, along the Nechako River. The lowermost slab of the launch had been damaged, causing boat trailers to become stuck which lead to unsanctioned boat launching from the adjacent shoreline. Cabin created the concept plans for how to replace the broken slab with new pre-fabricated pieces, and how to secure the slabs together to prevent migration.
The following activities summarize the main milestones of the project:
- Setting up site isolation to contain turbidity and potential contamination
- Cut and remove the broken slab and remaining debris
- Reconstruct a rock pad beneath the new slabs to match the existing grade
- Install the new concrete slab pieces
- Secure new slabs in place using static and running cable systems for built-in redundancy
- Install riprap along the flanks of the launch where undercutting was occurring
This project was unique in that Cabin provided all of the environmental services required for project implementation. Cabin provided the environmental management plan, acquired the appropriate permissions for the instream activities, conceptualized plans for how the repairs would take place, and conducted the repairs.
The project was completed in October 2022 when Nechako River water levels were low enough to access the damaged slab. This project involved engagement with the local First Nations who provided construction recommendations that were honoured by the field crew. The launch repairs were completed successfully on time and on budget.
