First Nations Referral Coordination

First Nations Referral Coordination

Okanagan
2016 – 2018

Cabin provided senior-level forestry services to Tolko’s referral department. One of our staff worked in-house to assist with the coordination and creation of their referral and information-sharing program. This project required a deep understanding of the cultural heritage resources and traditional values of local bands in order to develop best management practices to protect these values. Cabin was instrumental in the coordination of single-band referrals to minimize admin time, the fostering of working relationships with the local band, and coordination with Tolko and local bands for Preliminary Field Recces, Cultural Heritage Resources, and traditional use surveys.

The First Nations referral process acknowledges the rights, knowledge, and perspectives of Indigenous communities, ensuring their meaningful participation and influence in forestry activities that affect their territories. The process fosters a more equitable and respectful relationship between Indigenous peoples, the provincial government, and industry stakeholders, promoting sustainable forestry practices that honor Indigenous rights and cultural heritage.
